Daggakraal police in conjunction with Langfontein group, the farmers cooperation in Daggakraal, recovered 80 sheep worth R232 000 that were stolen from one of the farms in the area, and a 24-year-old suspect was arrested.
The sheep were recovered after a farm employee noticed that the sheep were missing on Thursday, 11 July 2024.
He immediately informed his employer, who alerted other group members.
The farmers followed the tracks and led them to the suspect’s kraal not far from the farm where the sheep were stolen.
It was established that the fence was cut where the sheep were driven.
After identifying the place where the sheep were kept, the farmers alerted police.
On police’s arrival, the stolen sheep were recovered. The sheep were positively identified through the brand marks.
The 24-year-old suspect that was found on the premises was arrested for possession of stolen livestock. The suspect is expected to appear before Amersfoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 July 2024.
Police have since instituted an investigation to ascertain if there are other suspects that could be linked to the theft.
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the farmers for not taking the law into their own hands. “The arrest of the suspect might help to solve other similar cases where farmers lost their livestock as a result of thefts,” added the General.
