Ongoing efforts to flush out criminality and reduce the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition in the Western Cape resulted in police members attached to the Anti-Gang Unit detaining three males in possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition in isolated incidents on Monday 03 June 2024.
The operational ready detail, deployed in Delft, proceeded to an address in Malunie Street in N2 Gateway in Delft South where they entered the premises and ensued with a search. They recovered a Taurus revolver and a 7.65 pistol with ammunition hidden in a bag on top of a cupboard in the bedroom. As a result they detained an adult man on a charge of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
Meanwhile the members deployed in Philippi policing precinct to combat the ongoing gang violence in the area were busy with a tracing operation in Hanover Park during which they entered a home in Como Court at around 20:15 and searched the premises as well as the occupants. They recovered a .38 special revolver in a rag, hidden in the oven warmer. The discovery resulted in the arrest of a 50-year-old man on a charge of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition.
In an unrelated incident the police members pounced on an address in Surwood Walk, known as a gang stronghold. Upon entering the premises they restrained the occupants and searched the entire premises. When searching an outside toilet facility, they discovered a revolver hidden in the roof. They seized the firearm and detained a 50-year-old man on a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Once charged, the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Bellville and Athlone Magistrates’ courts on the mentioned charges.
