Two suspects arrested for possession of firearms linked to a murder and attempted murder in Motherwell

Two suspects that were arrested on Sunday 23 March 2025 with two firearms in Humewood station precinct, have since been charged for the murder and attempted murder in a Motherwell shooting incident that was reported on Saturday 22 March 2025.

It is alleged that on Saturday 22 March 2025 at approximately 17:00, SAPS Motherwell were busy with patrols around NU5, when they were stopped by members of the community. The members were informed that there is a vehicle in Gugura Street, NU5, Motherwell and someone inside the vehicle was shot. On arrival they found the deceased Tumelo Matlabe (31) in his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. According to information on the scene the passenger was rushed to hospital for treatment.

On Sunday 23 March 2025 SAPS members followed up on information of suspects that were in possession of firearms. After a high-speed chase, the suspects were apprehended and the firearms recovered. During the investigation the suspects were linked to the murder of Tumelo Matlabe (31) and the attempted murder of a second victim.

Both suspects Mkhuseli Mbaleki (34) and Mthuthuzeli Nofomele (34) appeared in the Motherwell Magistrate court on Friday 11 April 2025 and the case was remanded to Thursday 17 April 2025 for bail application. The two suspects will also appear in the Gqeberha magistrate court tomorrow 16 April 2025 for the possession of unlawful firearm and ammunition.

The Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata commended the team of detectives involved in the investigation, for the dedication and commitment to ensure that the suspects involved in the murder and attempted murder are brought to justice.
