On Tuesday 08 April 2025, at 09:00, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Intervention Unit Officers, intercepted Eight udocumented foreign Nationals from Mozambique (4), Zimbabwe (3), Malawi (1) and South Africa (1) between the ages of eighteen(18) and fifty(50) for illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act in the Kingsway area.
While conducting illegal mining operations, due to the growing trend of illegal mining throughout the City of Ekurhuleni. Officers tactically proceeded to a mine shaft in Kingsway, upon arrival Officers cornered and nabbed nine (9) suspects with illegal mining equipment such as Phendukas, explosive material and steel pots used for illegal mining activities.
The suspects were arrested and taken to Kingsway Police Station, facing charges of illegal mining and undocumented foreign national in the boarders of the country. They are expected to appear at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
