As we commemorate Human Rights Day on Friday, which is also a long weekend, let the actions of motorists assist in the preservation of the right to life by obeying the rules of the roads in order to avoid needles loss of life due to road crashes. This is according to Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison Mr. Jackie Macie.
The MEC has urged motorists who will be travelling this long weekend to be mindful that it is already Autumn season, this means that it gets darker earlier. Therefore, travellers must plan their trips in such a way that they are able to travel during day time. He also advised road users to adjust their driving in line with prevailing weather and road conditions.
The MEC further called on long-distance drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before commencing with their journeys and he also insisted that they must rest sufficiently along the way.
“Our law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel will be on high alert to respond to any situation, however despite the plans that we put in place and activations road safety remains the responsibility of everyone.
We must all play our part by driving responsible and respecting other road users. Dangerous overtaking, texting while driving, excessive speeding and drunk driving must be avoided as these directly infringes on other people’s right to life,” says Macie.
Ends.
