The South African Police Service in Limpopo arrested 407 suspects during Operation Shanela, conducted from 7 to 13 October 2024. The suspects face charges including murder, rape, robbery, housebreaking, assault, dealing in drugs, unlawful possession of firearms, and contravention of the Immigration Act.
Operations involved roadblocks, stop-and-searches, and tracing wanted suspects. The multi-disciplinary operations were conducted by SAPS units, SANDF, departments, and stakeholders like Community in Blue, serving as force multipliers in crime-combating efforts.
Recovered items include:
– 4 firearms
– 34 ammunition
– 1 blasting explosive
– 8,604 and 15kg of copper cables
– 125 counterfeit goods
– 19 dangerous weapons
– 3 stolen/robbed vehicles
– Large quantity of alcohol
– Various drugs (dagga, nyaope, crystal meth)
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended members for tirelessly ensuring citizens’ safety. Some suspects have begun appearing before various Magistrate’s courts across the province.
