Anti-Gang Unit arrest suspect for the illegal possession of a firearm

Following the recent spate of shooting incidents in the Delft policing precinct, members of the Anti-Gang Unit were deployed in the area to combat gang violence. Their persistence were rewarded when they arrested an adult male when he was caught in possession of a firearm and ammunition in the early hours of Tuesday morning, 22 October 2024.

The members followed up information about a firearm that is stored at a premises in the Covid informal settlement and searched the informal dwelling. They confiscated a firearm without a serial number with 29 rounds of ammunition which was buried in the ground inside the informal dwelling. They arrested an adult male for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The suspect is due to make a court appearance in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court once he has been charge.

In an unrelated matter members of the Maitland Flying Squad searched a premises in Athlone early this morning after they received information about a firearm at a premises in the informal settlement. They searched the informal dwelling and confiscated a firearm with 50 rounds of ammunition hidden in the couch. They arrested a 40-year-old man for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

He will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once he has been charged.

The illegal possession of a firearm is a criminal offence and is punishable by law.
