In a swift reaction attributed to community involvement, the police in Mopani district apprehended three suspects, aged between 36 and 46, including a taxi owner and recovered illegal firearms, following a business robbery incident in Giyani policing area.
On Thursday morning, September 26, 2024, two unknown African males robbed a shop at Ndambi village. Swift community assistance led to the arrest of one suspect, aged 44, and recovery of some robbed items and an illegal firearm believed to have been used in commission of the crime.
The Mopani District Tracking Team pursued the investigation, arresting the second suspect, an undocumented foreign national, aged 36, in Mageva village on Friday, 27 September 2024. During the arrest, they recovered another firearm and additional robbed items.
During the operation, the team also received a tip-off about a male suspect in possession of an illegal firearm. The 46-year-old taxi owner was nabbed at his residence in Ndambi village in possession of an assault rifle and ammunition.
The trio are set to appear before Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 30 September 2024, facing charges of business robbery, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen properties and contravening the Immigration Act
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Samuel Manala praised the role players for a well-coordinated operation, emphasizing the commitment to eradicating illegal firearms, thus preventing serious and violent crimes.
