Heritage Day ended in jail for five suspects in Hanover Park and Manenberg, who were arrested by Metro Police officers for the illegal possession of ammunition and a range of other crimes. In addition, the MPD Tactical Response Unit recovered a stolen motorcycle in Manenberg.
At approximately 20:30, officers were conducting crime prevention patrols in Hanover Park when they reacted on information about two suspects who are in possession of ammunition in the Kampies Informal Settlement.
As the officers approached, they noticed two men matching the description, and stopped to search and question them
about the ammunition.
They informed the officers that they handed the ammunition to their female friend, who upon questioning denied it.
The men insisted that they handed the ammunition to her and she eventually directed officers to the hiding place.
Upon searching the parameters, the officers discovered an amount of 235 x .22 rounds of ammunition and seven rifle rounds, hidden away in a sock amongst the bushes.
The suspects aged 58, 37 and 34 were arrested and detained at Philippi SAPS.
At around 20:50, during patrol in Jansen Street in Manenberg, officers from the Tactical Response Unit noticed a man pushing a motorcycle.
The officers stopped to assist and noticed that the driver was nervous and the motorcycle had no number plate.
When they tested the motorcycle, officers discovered that it was reported stolen in the Goodwood area.
Officers arrested the 22- year old suspect for possession of a stolen motorcycle.
At the same time, a group of men who were loitering near the motorcycle ran in different directions when they saw the patrol vehicle stop.
Members pursued and apprehended one of them. After permission was sought to conduct a search, the officers found the 35-year-old suspect in possession of an imitation firearm.
Both suspects was detained at Manenberg SAPS.
