A suspect sought for a spate of robberies in the Verulam CBD – KZN was arrested and a firearm was recovered by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) in Canelands – KZN.
Reaction Officers received information that the 24 year old wanted male was spotted on Station Road. Further information confirmed that he was in possession of a firearm that was stolen from a pedestrian during a robbery on George Sewpersad Street.
RUSA Members immediately mobilised and cornered the suspect at his hideout. A 9mm CZ75 pistol with five rounds of ammunition was recovered in his possession. Reaction Officers contacted the complainant from the robbery and acquired the serial number of his firearm. It was confirmed that the pistol belonged to him. He also stated that the magazine contained fifteen rounds of ammunition and one round in the chamber when he was deprived of the weapon.
The suspect could not account for the missing eleven rounds.
It was further established that the suspect was a member of gang that terrorised patrons in the Central Business District. One of the victims was a Policeman. During an interview, the male informed Officers that he operated with three other individuals. They targeted their victims for their cellphones which were sold for R500 to random individuals in the taxi and bus rank. They would use the proceeds of the sale to purchase drugs.
The suspect was placed under arrest and detained at SAPS Verulam.
