Man robbed and escapes kidnap attempt in Durban

An employee of The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) made contact with Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) this afternoon (Saturday 17:47) reporting that he had escaped from an Uber vehicle after the driver had robbed and attempted to kidnap him.

The victim snapped the picture of the vehicle as he fled. The driver had stopped at a Shell Service Station on Florida Road in Durban- KZN for unknown reasons. He immediately contacted the RUSA Operations Center providing details of the Uber driver and the vehicle.

When interviewed, the man explained that he had boarded the Uber in North Beach & was headed to Windermere via a McDonalds Drive through. The complainant explained that the Uber driver became agitated regarding the detour despite the McDonald’s drive through being part of a scheduled route & payment had been done via the Uber App. He added that the driver began hurling racial slurs and then locked the doors in the vehicle threatening to drive him to a secluded location and have other Uber drivers hurt him.

According to the victim he was then robbed of R500 in cash and driven to Florida Road – Durban. When the vehicle stopped, he managed to open the door and flee.

Investigations are continuing.
