Sagavan Dharmiah was remanded in custody to the Verulam SAPS holding cells by the Verulam Magistrates Court in KZN earlier today.
Dharmiah was arrested by members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) on May 13, 2024. He was tracked by Reaction Officers to a home in Westham – Phoenix in Kwazulu Natal. He has been in custody since.
Dharmiah was sought by Law Enforcement for the robbery and scamming of elderly victims in the Verulam CBD. His victims were aged between 65 – 80 years old. The car that was used to commit the crimes was recovered next to his home.
Since the arrest fourteen elderly victims has reported to the RUSA Headquarters to report being scammed or robbed by the same suspect. The Modus Operandi in these cases remained similar. It is unclear if all the victims have opened criminal cases.
A reliable source has informed Reaction Officers that the suspect in custody has threatened to harm Officers that were instrumental in his arrest.
