KZN Department of Transport officially handed over a contractor for the upgrade of District Road D1867 in Phongolo Municipality

With the view to improve the provincial road network, KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liason, Sipho Hlomuka today visited the community of Phongolo where he officially handed over a contractor for the upgrade of District Road D1867 in Phongolo Municipality, under Zululand District and the construction of Mozana River Bridge.

The project entails the upgrade of 10.878 kilometres from gravel to blacktop standards, from the intersection of N2 to D1867 link. The route will link with P271 in eDumbe area and the construction of Mozana River which will be a direct link between KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga province.

The upgrade of District Road D1867 from gravel to blacktop of Earthworks, Layerworks, Surfacing, & Drainage and also the construction of Mozana River Bridge at km7+200 in Zululand District under Empangeni Region. This upgrade and construction represent more that just infrastructure development, It is a commitment to enhance the quality of life for Phongolo and eDumbe community members. Emerging contractors will benefit and 246 jobs will be created for local community members.

This road provides access to various primary and high schools.

The construction of Mozana River Bridge at 1.2 km is under Inkosi Mahlobo under the KwaNdwalaza Traditional Council.
MEC Hlomuka then proceeded to Khuphunyawo Area to engage with the community of Ward 03 to officially handover the responsible contractor. The upgrade of this road and the construction of the bridge will facilitate easier and safer transportation routes. This infrastructural project is expected to cost R427 million with more the 200 employment opportunities set to be created.

MEC Hlomuka was joined by Member of Parliament, Hon. T. Myeni, Zululand District Executive Committee member, Cllr. S. Mhlongo, Local of Traditional Leadership, Inkosi uSibiya, Inkosi uMavuso, Inkosi uNtshangase and Inkosi uMsibi, local ward councillors, stakeholders and senior officials.
