Tshwane Metro Police Department Cable Theft Unit, Drug Unit and Bike Unit successes.
The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) Bike Unit members in Region 1 Section 2 attended to a complaint in Pretoria North on Monday, 29 January 2024, about a spaza shop that was closed down by City of Tshwane fire brigade inspectors for non-compliance. When they revisited the spaza shop, it was still in operation. The TMPD bike squad found three males in the spaza shop who were dealing in illicit
cigarettes.
20 000 cigarettes with an estimated street value of R20 0000 were found. All three males were arrested for dealing in illicit cigarettes, illegal immigration and obstruction of justice.
There was another success by TMPD Cable Theft Unit members on the same date when they responded to a complaint in Brooklyn about cable theft in progress at a substation. Two suspects were found inside the substation busy stealing cables. Theywere arrested for tampering and damaging essential infrastructure and possession of stolen cables.
The same members recovered suspected stolen copper cables in Rosslyn, north of Pretoria.
They received a tip-off about two males taking copper cables to a scrapyard. When the two saw the officers, they ran and left the copper cables. While the officers were in the scrapyard, a bakkie carrying copper cables arrived. When the driver noticed the officers, he fled and a chase ensued. They managed to apprehend the driver and he was arrested for possession of suspected stolen copper cables.
Additional to these successes, one drug dealer was arrested by TMPD Drug Unit members who was found selling heroine (nyaope) and crystal meth in Cullinan. He was in possession of drugs with an estimated street value of R13 500.
