The law enforcement agencies continue relentlessly to disrupt and clamp down on illegal mining activities.

On 29 January 2024, the police in Johannesburg District embarked on an illegal mining operation in Florida area. The operation resulted in the arrests of six undocumented persons and two men, all suspected to be involved illegal mining activities. The police also recovered 10 live ammunition of AK-47 and several illegal mining equipment including, phendukas, steel mining balls and electric motors were seized.

During the operation, the Station Commander of Florida, Colonel Tsotetsi took the opportunity to interact with the community of Jerusalema informal settlement which has experienced crime related to illegal mining activities. The community raised their concerns and contact details of the station management were also shared with them.

The police will continue with these operations and the public is requested to work together with the police by reporting any illegal mining activities occurring around their areas at their nearest police station or to Crime Stop on 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be reported via MySAPS App which can be downloaded on any smartphone. All information received will be treated with strictest confidence.
