The swift response of SAPS members, responding to information, resulted in the arrest of four suspects on charges of dealing in drugs, possession of drugs and abalone and possession of ammunition in isolated incidents.
The platoon of Operation Shanela deployed to combat crime and gang violence in Nyanga and Samora Machel policing precinct on Tuesday, 14 November 2023, responded to information about drug dealing. The convoy approached the premises in Zwelitsha location, Nyanga from different angles simultaneously and entered the premises, searched all the occupants and in the process confiscated a consignment of drugs and cash. They arrested a 44-year-old man on a charge of dealing in drugs.
In an unrelated intervention on Wednesday, 15 November 2023, police members of the Western Cape Tactical Response Unit pursued information about a foreign national transporting drugs with a black Mercedes Benz to a storage facility in Philippi. The members spotted the motor vehicle near to Olieboom Road, where they forced the driver to stop. They accompanied the driver to the identified address where they searched the premises, confiscating 66 bags of dagga and nine units of heroin. The members arrested an adult male on a charge of possession of drugs.
Meanwhile police members attached to Operation Shanela conducted an intelligence driven operation pertaining to a possible storage facility for abalone in Strand on Wednesday, 15 November 2023. The members tactically approached the residence and an intense search of the entire premises were conducted. They confiscated a consignment of abalone and rock lobsters, cash and ammunition. Two suspects, a 28-year-old man and a 70-year-old women were detained on charges of possession abalone, possession of unlicensed ammunition and possession of rock lobsters.
Once charged the suspects are expected to make their respective court appearances in the Athlone and Strand Magistrate court’s on the mentioned charges.
