Collaboration between flying squad and law enforcement brings armed robbers to book

The prompt response and vigilance of members attached to the Western Cape Flying Squad in collaboration with members of Law Enforcement from the City of Cape Town, ensured that four suspects will appear in court on charges related to armed robbery, possession of prohibited firearms, fraud and the possession of presumed stolen property.

On Saturday 21 October 2023 at approximately 11:20 members from the Western Cape Flying Squad as well as Law Enforcement responded on an alert of suspicious black Toyota Yaris which is possibly equipped with cloned registration plates. The members spotted the vehicle which had only one occupant inside, later to be established, the driver of the getaway car. As members were about to approach the vehicle, three men came running out of a store and boarded the vehicle, the Yaris, which immediately sped off.

A high speed chase ensued whereby the vehicle was finally boxed in and forced to a halt near Palmeira and Campground Road in Claremont. Upon searching the vehicle, members found three firearms, clothing items, bedding, cellphones and a substantial amount of cash. The four occupants of the car were arrested and detained at the Claremont police holding cells.

Further investigation confirmed that the suspects just pulled off an armed robbery at a shop in Claremont. The possibility that the four could be involved and possibly linked to other serious crime, are being investigated.

The four suspects between the ages of 25 and 45 are scheduled to make their first court appearance in the Cape Town Magistrates’ court on the above mentioned charges on Monday, 23 October 2023.

The provincial management has lauded the members involved for their commitment and the coordination between different entities to bring the perpetrators of crime to book.
