Suspect nabbed in possession of counterfeit money in Hillbrow

A male suspect was arrested by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) IIOC Undercover Reaction Unit for the possession of counterfeit money in Hillbrow, Johannesburg.

On Tuesday, 29 August 2023, whilst patrolling in Hillbrow officers were approached by a member of the public who gave an account of a male who had scammed them of their money.

The officers were given the description of the alleged suspect. The male suspect was spotted and the officers observed his movements as he kept going in and out of a building at Van De Merwe Street and Banket Street.
The officers subsequently approached the male as he exited the building. The male was searched and R50 notes amounting to R1500 were found in his possession.

Upon close inspection the officers discovered that the money found in the male’s possession was counterfeit.
The male was questioned on where and how he acquired the notes, but he failed to give an explanation. He was immediately arrested for being in possession of the counterfeit money and was detained at Hillbrow SAPS.
