Suspect arrested for possession of abalone

A high-speed chase from Jeffreys Bay ended in Gqeberha yesterday afternoon, 19 September 2022 when SAPS Thornhill members arrested a 39-year-old suspect for possession of abalone.

At about 11:00 on the mentioned date, after receiving information about a suspicious vehicle, a Red Renault KWID, the vehicle was spotted at about 11:20 driving towards Jeffreys Bay on the R102 road. When the police members turned their vehicle around, the driver of the Renault KWID increased speed which resulted in a vehicle chase that ensued along the R102, N2 highway, Old Cape Road, and finally ended in Brabant Road in Kabega Park where the driver of the KWID lost control of the vehicle (due to very wet rain conditions) and embanked on the pavement.

As the driver attempted to flee, he was apprehended. On searching the vehicle, large black bags containing 2372 units of abalone were discovered and confiscated. The estimated street value of the abalone is approximately R250 000-00.

The suspect was arrested on a charge of possession of abalone. He is expected to appear in court soon.
