Provincial Commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended members of the Anti-Gang Unit and Provincial Tracking Team for arresting twelve suspects who have committed crimes that include murder and attempted murder in Eldorado Park and Westbury, recently. The unit also recovered six unlicensed firearms in the last few days.
A suspect was arrested on Tuesday, 30 August 2022, after a man was shot and killed in Eldorado Park on Saturday, 27 August 2022. It is reported that a group of men was having drinks after a funeral when a Golf 7, with five occupants, stopped next to them and fired shots at them. One person was fatally wounded. Police are still searching for other suspects.
Two suspects were arrested on Monday, 29 August 2022, for a case of murder and attempted murder that occurred in Eldorado Park on 19 July 2022. It is reported that a group of men was sitting next to a block of flats when they were approached by two suspects who are known to them. The suspects then fired shots that resulted in one man being killed and the other man being injured and taken to hospital. The police have been looking for the suspects until Monday when they arrested them in Eldorado Park. One of the suspects was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition while the other suspect is linked to another case of attempted murder that occurred in 2021.
Furthermore, police arrested a suspect following a shooting incident that occurred in Westbury, Sophiatown, on 22 July 2022. The suspect allegedly shot at the victim without saying a word. The victim was taken to the nearest medical care center for treatment.
“I am pleased with my members who are working so hard to ensure that those responsible for the killings in our province are arrested and firearms that are in the wrong hands are seized,” said Lieutenant General Mawela.
The suspects are expected to appear at Lenasia and Johannesburg Magistrates’ Courts in due course, facing charges that include murder, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
