Brothers remanded in custody after being nabbed with four firearms

Mdumiseni (53) and Mzabeni Biyela (49) appeared before the Mtunzini Magistrate’s Court on 18 March 2022. They were remanded in custody until 24 March 2022 for a formal bail application.

Their arrest follows an intelligence-driven operation that was conducted by the Sundumbili police at Dendethu on 17 March 2022. The Dendethu area, which is under the Sundumbili policing precinct, is a hotspot area where murder and attempted murder cases are most prevalent. Firearms are used in the commission of these serious and violent crimes. Following an investigation, Police proceeded to an identified homestead where a search was conducted.

Three homemade shotguns and a pistol were seized from the accused. The brothers were arrested and charged for being in unlawful possession of firearms. The recovered firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing. Operations are still ongoing to root out all illegal firearms in the province.
