Northern Cape SAPS hosts National SAPS Mountain Bike championships in Kimberley

Northern Cape :On Sunday, 19 August 2018, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in the Northern Cape, Lt Gen Risimati Shivuri welcomed approximately 150 cyclists and support teams during the Official Opening Ceremony of the annual SAPS Mountain Bike championships that was hosted in Kimberley from the 20 to 23 August 2018 in Kimberley. The event was held at the Horseshoe Inn in Kimberley. Lt Gen Shivuri was accompanied Brigadier Thabo Moeng, who has been appointed as the guardian of the mountain bike sporting code in the Northern Cape.

The teams also had a social responsibility project that was held at Kelryn in Barkley-West, where the teams collected money and handed over R10 700-00 to the NGO, Caritas. The competition comprised of four categories, namely time trial, cross country, marathon and hill climbing. After a week of grueling competition the winners in the various categories were awarded with medals and trophies.

The overall winners in the men’s section were announced as WO Wynand Mulder from the Western Cape in first place, representing the Northern Cape, WO Bennie Coetzer was second and Capt Herman van der Westhuizen from Mpumalanga was third. In the ladies’ section the overall winners were Capt Lindsay Wegner from the Western Cape in first place, WO Natasha Harmse from Mpumalanga in second place and Capt Marie Kleynhans from North West in third place.

The tournament was successful and the 2019 championships will be hosted by the Gauteng province.
