A small bread truck had collided into the back of a large 18-wheeler container truck while both were travelling on the N12 in the direction of Sowteo at the Reading Interchange in Alberton.
It is not clear as to what exactly caused the two vehicles to collide, but the collision left the cabin of the smaller truck extensively damaged and crushed. The two men travelling in the cabin were trapped in their seats, where the Fire and Rescue Department had to use hydraulic equipment to free the two men.
ER24 paramedics stabilised the men in their seats while the Jaws of Life were used to cut away at the metal. Both men had sustained multiple broken bones, cuts to their faces and bodies and other possible severe injuries. After they were removed, almost 30 minutes later, both men were placed into waiting ambulances and then taken to the Union Hospital in Alberton for further assessment and care.
The occupants of the other truck suffered no injury in the collision.
Traffic is still being diverted off the N12 onto the R59 so as to avoid the accident.
