Seven killed in North West car crash

North West police have confirmed the death of seven people in a road accident involving two vehicles in Slurry near Mahikeng last night. The South African Police Services spokesperson Adel Myburgh says five people in the car and two in the bakkie died on the scene.

She could not confirm the reported death of two more people on their way to hospital. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.

Meanwhile, a 32-year-old male driver has been arrested for drunken driving on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway in North West. According to police, the driver was transporting iron shacks from Rustenburg to Borolelo Township at Swartruggens when he was stopped at a roving roadblock. He was allegedly found to be drunk after a breathalyser test.

Police say 65 motorists were screened for alcohol during the roving roadblock as part of Operation Futha. The provincial road traffic authorities embarked on the special operation dubbed Operation Futha targeted at drunken drivers, speed and drag racing as part of its Make Road Safe/Arrive Alive Festive Season Campaign in order to reduce accidents and fatalities on public roads.
