Two miners crushed by locomotives

Two miners have died at the country’s gold mines in as many days.

The National Union of Mineworkers on Tuesday said a miner was killed at Harmony Gold’s Tshepong Mine in the Free State after being crushed by a locomotive.

In another incident, a worker was killed at AngloGold’s Tau Lekoa mine in similar circumstances.

NUM has accused mining companies of being delusional if they believe they have improved safety standards in South Africa.

The union’s spokesman Lesiba Seshoka said, “We will down tools if the company refuses to adhere to safety standards.”

The union added that Harmony Gold has the highest number of mining-related deaths in the industry.
