A collision between a bus and taxi on the N1 near the Maraisburg off-ramp has left one woman dead and thirteen others injured this morning.
ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene and found a large bus parked in the emergency lane of the highway. A wrecked taxi lay between the centre mediums splitting the highways.
On assessment, paramedics discovered the lifeless body of a woman in her 30s lying a few metres away from the taxi. Unfortunately she had already succumbed to her severe injuries.
12 other patients were found scattered around the taxi while another man was found trapped within the taxi. Three patients were found to be in a critical condition while the remaining patients were found to have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
Rescue services had to use the jaws-of-life and cut away the roof of the taxi to free the trapped man.
Paramedics provided the critically injured patients with advanced life support and thereafter transported them to various hospitals for urgent medical attention.
The remaining patients were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported them to nearby hospitals for further observations.
It is understood that the taxi rear-ended the bus, causing the taxi to roll into the centre medium.
Local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
