A young man has sustained critical injuries in an accident on the R21 this morning.
The single vehicle accident took place just near the Griffiths road turn off shortly before 7am. Paramedics who arrived on scene, immediately saw the extensive damage to the vehicle and found the single male occupants still seated in the drivers seat.
The entire vehicle appeared to have been ripped apart and shredded after the vehicle cashed into the side barrier of the highway. The engine had been flung from the engine bay and lay around 50 meters down the road.
The Fire and Rescue team from the Boksburg North Fire Department were on scene, and while the Advanced Life Support paramedic treated the injured man, they quickly started cutting at the vehicle using the Jaws of Life so that the patient would be removed safely. In a short time, there was enough space for the patient to be removed, and he was loaded into the waiting ambulance and taken to the Life Glynnwood hospital on life support. He was in a critical condition when handed over to hospital staff.
The reason for the accident will need to be determined by police who attended the scene.
