The Gauteng Department of transport is still in the process of awarding the tenders to the manufacturer’s of number plates. The Province will also have to announce in the government gazette when the plates and numbers will be applicable.
As we are not involved in the manufacture and supply of numbers we unfortunately do not have information in this regard. The first phase of the project would be to issue the new numbers and plates simultaneously and as subsequent phases to replace the current number plates with the new type.
We have however already prepared the eNaTIS to generate the numbers in the new format and are also waiting for the province to activate the functionality.

I have just spoken to a lady at the Benoni Roads Office who has informed me that the old number plates do not need to be ‘re-registered’ to the new number plates. Only new cars will be issued with the new number plates. So the above table is no longer valid.

What is the latest on the new number plates? Is wackiejalker’s post still valid or any changes?
